Heritage

This almshouse is a good example of philanthropy of wealthy late Victorians. These charming cottages were built in 1877 in Sherwood, Nottingham for poor widows or spinsters whose fathers were merchants, tradesmen or professional men. The building was paid for by Maria Christian Cartwright, born in Nottingham in 1805, wife of Sidney Cartwright of The Leasowes, Penn, Staffordshire.

NCHA assumed trusteeship in 1995 and renovated the almshouses the following year.
