How Rachael’s support changed Demi’s life
Demi and her daughter Remi moved into Neo House in Nottingham in July 2025. The service provides temporary accommodation for families experiencing homelessness.
At first, Demi found it difficult to settle into her new environment. She kept to herself and avoided engaging with staff and other residents, feeling uncertain about what lay ahead.
That began to change in September, when Rachael joined the team. Demi and Rachael quickly formed a strong bond – one that would have a lasting impact on Demi’s life.
Demi says:
“The best way I can describe Rachael is that she’s been the light at the end of a very dark tunnel for me. She’s given me so much support, not just with finding a home but with my mental health too. She knows when I’m in a bad place and what I need to help me out of it.”
As a Housing Project Worker at Neo House, Rachael’s role is to support residents in securing long-term accommodation and to connect them with additional services. But for Demi, it was clear that Rachael brought far more than just professional support.
Demi adds:
“Rachael was so reassuring, through both the good days and the bad. She always seemed to know exactly what I needed and how to help me. She’s the same with everyone – she organised little parties for the children at Halloween and Christmas, and it meant so much to all of us.”
With Rachael’s support, Demi was able to secure a permanent home for herself and Remi in Nottingham. While the process had its ups and downs, Rachael made sure Demi stayed on track, offering guidance and reassurance every step of the way and encouraging her not to lose hope.
Reflecting on her journey, Demi says:
“I moved into my home in February, after seven months at Neo House, and I cried when I left. I was so sad to say goodbye to Rachael but also excited for the future too. I gave her a card, a mug and a little soft toy to show how grateful I was and how much she meant to me.
“Rachael’s support continues for six months after moving on, so I’m really glad we’re still in touch and she can see how well I’m doing. This year, I’m looking forward to hosting my own Halloween and Christmas celebrations for me and Remi, it really shows how much life has changed.
“Now that things feel more stable, I can start planning for the future. My daughter starts school full-time in September, and after that I’d like to find a job – I can see myself working in a little coffee shop. I’m excited about what’s ahead, and I have Rachael to thank for helping me get here.”
Rachael is quick to reflect the praise back onto Demi:
“I’m so grateful for Demi’s kind words, but she should give herself more credit. I’m incredibly proud of her for not giving up and for getting herself to such a positive place. Helping people like Demi is the best part of my job, it’s what motivates me every day.”
