Finding security through shared ownership
Read Jacqui's story, three years after moving into her shared ownership home.
For Jacqui, shared ownership provided the opportunity to achieve something she had wanted for a long time: a new build home of her own.
Three years ago, she moved into her three-bedroom home in Swadlincote after purchasing a 25% share through NCHA's shared ownership scheme.
"I wanted a home of my own and to be independent," said Jacqui. "I'd always had an interest in new-build homes because I worked in the building trade for 20 years and have family who still work in the industry. I love the design of modern homes, especially open-plan living."
Jacqui first discovered the development after driving past and spotting a shared ownership sign. Keen to find out more, she contacted the team to see whether the scheme could work for her circumstances.
Like many people, Jacqui assumed shared ownership wasn't an option because she already owned a home. However, after selling her previous property, she was able to use some of the proceeds to purchase a share in her new home.
"The sales team helped me understand shared ownership and what I could realistically afford. I knew I wouldn't be able to buy a 50% share, but they talked me through purchasing a smaller share instead. They made the whole process easy to understand."
From the moment she viewed the floorplan, Jacqui knew she had found the right home.
"When I walked through the door and saw the open-plan living area, I knew it was perfect for me. I chose a three-bedroom home because my grandchildren often come to stay, and the layout works brilliantly for us."
The location was equally important. Situated between her daughters' homes and her 84-year-old mother, who she helps care for, the property allows Jacqui to stay close to the people who matter most.
As someone with experience in the building industry, Jacqui also appreciates the benefits of living in a new-build home.
"It's spacious, energy efficient and has plenty of storage and natural light. It doesn't take much to heat, so my bills are low, and everything has been designed really well."
Three years on, Jacqui remains delighted with her decision.
"I feel safe and secure here. Shared ownership gave me the chance to buy a home that was affordable for me, and having NCHA there for support gives me real peace of mind. With retirement approaching, I know I'm living in a home I can afford and one that needs very little maintenance."
With parks, shops and Swadlincote town centre all nearby, Jacqui feels right at home in her community and couldn't be happier with the lifestyle shared ownership has helped her achieve.
