Helping families move forward from homelessness
Helping families move forward from homelessness
This World Homelessness Day, we're shining a light on the work taking place across Nottingham City to support families facing homelessness, helping them take the next step towards a more secure future.
NCHA works in close partnership with Nottingham City Council to provide safe, stable accommodation for families experiencing homelessness while they wait for a long-term home.
Over the last year, the council has commissioned NCHA to open a number of services designed to give families a secure place to live while they access housing through the Homelink service or seek accommodation in the private rented sector. For many families, this provides a more suitable alternative to bed and breakfast or hotel accommodation, where households can face uncertainty and be moved between locations at short notice.
Offering security and peace of mind
Across Nottingham City, we manage 84 temporary accommodation units for families experiencing homelessness, alongside 30 units for single homeless people and floating support services that help prevent homelessness before it reaches crisis point.
Having a stable place to stay can make a significant difference. It gives families the security they need to focus on their wellbeing, maintain routines and take positive steps towards finding a permanent home.
Alongside accommodation, NCHA colleagues provide practical and emotional support tailored to each family's circumstances. This can include help with housing applications, accessing financial support, registering with healthcare services and connecting people with specialist organisations where additional support is needed.
One customer said:
"The staff here make me feel safe and supported, and I truly appreciate their efforts and hard work. My support worker has been extremely kind, helpful and supportive at all times. She always listens and tries her best to help whenever needed."
The support on offer is already seeing some fantastic outcomes, with 92 families moving on to secure, long-term homes.
Partnership working to deliver change
Homelessness remains a significant challenge, but partnership working between housing providers, local authorities and support services plays a vital role in helping people find stability, rebuild confidence and move towards a more secure future.
Cllr Jay Hayes, Nottingham’s Executive Member for Housing and Planning, said:
“Every family deserves a safe and secure place to call home. When families face homelessness, having somewhere settled to stay, alongside the right support, can make a real difference at what is often a very difficult time.
“Working closely with partners like NCHA helps us provide families with greater stability while they explore their options for a permanent home. It’s about more than providing a roof over someone’s head – it’s about giving people the breathing space and support they need to move forward.”
“This World Homelessness Day, we recognise the importance of safe accommodation, compassionate support and the positive difference these services make to families across Nottingham every day.”
