“A fresh start thanks to shared ownership”

Shared ownership is an affordable way to buy a home of your own. NCHA's customers have written about their experiences in a series of case studies, to explain what shared ownership has done for them.

Martin managed to secure a two-bedroom shared ownership property in rural Derbyshire, where he needed a fresh start.

“I brought my first house when I was 22. Due to a marriage breakdown I had to move into rented accommodation. After years of renting I was then forced to leave as the owner wanted to sell. I was keen to get back on the property ladder.

“During this period I also discovered that I had stage three bowel cancer. It was a worrying time but the support I received from Sandra and Wendy at NCHA Sales throughout has been much appreciated.

“I was quite particular when looking for a new home. So I was delighted when I managed to secure a semi-detached property that was south-facing and over-looking the countryside at Heage in Derbyshire.

“I feel so lucky to be living in the area where I grew up and close to my mum. By using NCHA’s shared ownership scheme, I have been able to purchase a brand-new home that I can put my personal touch on and decorate the way I wish. I was also able to use the cash from the sale of my treasured Ford RS and a lump sum from my pension to purchase a 45% share of this house.”

Martin moved in to his new home during October 2022 and has settled in really well. During our visit in December we were delighted to hear he is cancer free and able to celebrate his first Christmas in his new home.

“These quality new homes have been built with plenty of insulation. I pay particular attention to the temperature of the house and I am really pleased to see it is performing well. I have done a lot in the house already – painting the walls and woodwork, hanging the curtains and blinds and even built a shed in the garden. I feel really proud to be in a safe and secure home for my future.”
