A new sensory room for Abbey Mead
At NCHA, we believe in building more than homes - we build stronger communities. That’s why, when Abbey Mead Primary Academy in Leicester approached us for help, we were delighted to lend a hand.
The school, located near our development on Loughborough Road where we’ve built 100 new affordable homes, faced a growing challenge. With stretched SEND resources nationally, Abbey Mead needed to accommodate more children with additional needs. To provide the right support, they wanted to transform an unused space into a sensory room - a calming environment where children can relax and regulate their emotions.
Recognising the importance of this project, we sent a team of operatives to donate their time and expertise, carrying out essential electrical and decorating work to prepare the room. Over the summer holidays, the school fitted the space with sensory toys, displays, and equipment.
An incredible impact
By November, the transformation was complete - and the impact has been incredible. The room is now used every day, giving children a safe, soothing space that supports their wellbeing and learning.
To celebrate, we were invited to a special afternoon tea at the school, where strawberries, cakes, and songs from the children made for a truly memorable occasion. Seeing the joy and gratitude from staff and pupils reinforced why projects like this matter so much.
Headteacher Gary Aldred shared:
“NCHA’s generosity and collective expertise has made a massive difference to the school’s ability to support students with special needs.
"This is going to make an incredible difference to many children, their educational development and their families too.”
We’re proud to have played a part in this project and look forward to continuing to deliver social value in the communities we serve.
