A secure tenancy and a friendship for life

New neighbours make a special bond

Earlier this year, neighbours Laura and Jaddine became the first residents to move into NCHA’s newest development in Leicester. Both mums settled into spacious four-bedroom homes and what started as a fresh start has turned into something truly special.
 
Before moving, life was tough. Both had experienced homelessness and insecure tenancies. They’d struggled with difficult neighbours, where even letting the children play outside felt impossible. They hoped this move would give them stability. What they didn’t expect was to find the best friendship they could wish for this Christmas.
 
Jaddine said: “By being put next door to each other, it’s saved us. It’s made life so much easier. We’re all one big family and respect each other.”
 
Their homes are more than bricks and mortar. They’re places where they feel safe and where support is always next door. 
 
This summer was one to remember. With generous gardens and walks along the river to Watermead Park, life feels brighter. There have been paddling pools, BBQs, and even shared gardens. Laura’s love of gardening has inspired Jaddine to grow plants, and together they’ve created a lovely space for their families.
 
“I used to be locked inside my own house because of my mental health and my living situation. Now I feel more like myself. I laugh loads. We’re both being better versions of ourselves.” Said Jaddine.
 
The move has transformed daily life. School runs are shared, the mums have their own bedrooms for the first time in years, and the children have settled beautifully. They’ve grown in confidence, made friends with other neighbours, and learned to manage their emotions.
 
Laura said: “Going from homeless to this, we’ve just been able to enjoy life again.”
 
Looking ahead, Laura and Jaddine feel hopeful. In 2026, they’ll secure their tenancies so they have a home for life and continue planning adventures together. For them, these homes aren’t just a roof over their heads, they’re the foundation for a secure and brighter future.
