Top tips for home security
We want to encourage all customers to take a few simple steps to help protect your home and personal safety, especially as the nights are getting longer.
It’s generally a good idea to:
- Always lock your front and back doors, even when you're at home
- Ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked when you go out, even for a short time
- Keep valuables out of sight from windows and doors
- Leave a light on or use a timer when you're away to make your home look occupied.
On occasion, people may knock on your door who you haven’t met before. Here are some top tips to stay safe:
- Always check who’s at the door before opening it (consider using a door chain or spyhole if you have one).
- Ask for identification – all NCHA employees and our approved contractors carry official ID. We strongly encourage you to ask to see identification before allowing anyone you don’t know into your home. We’ll be happy to help put your mind at ease.
- Don’t be pressured into letting someone in or making a decision on the spot.
- If in doubt, keep them out – you’re under no obligation to open the door to anyone you don’t know.
If you're ever unsure about someone claiming to be from NCHA or one of our contractors, you can always check with us directly.
