Keep safe this festive season

Christmas is a time for fun and festivities, but it can also bring a rise in accidents. With busy social calendars, extra cooking, decorations, and travel, a few simple steps can help prevent accidents and keep the season joyful.

Use the tips below to help keep your celebrations safe and incident‑free.

Fire safety at home

·       Check that all seasonal lights conform to British Standards (BS EN 60598) and carry the CE mark.

·       Avoid overloading sockets – use one plug per socket wherever possible.

·       Keep decorations away from heat sources (fires, heaters, hobs) and never leave candles unattended.

·       Switch all fairy lights off before bed, or if you leave the house.

·       Test smoke alarms regularly and don’t remove batteries. Fit and test a carbon monoxide alarm.

Christmas trees

·       Real trees dry out quickly – keep them watered and remove promptly after Christmas.

·       Artificial trees should be fire‑retardant. Position all trees away from heaters and open flames.

Cooking and food safety

·       Never leave cooking unattended and avoid cooking if drinking.

·       Keep flammable items away from hobs and supervise children.

·       Prevent food poisoning: separate raw meat, cook thoroughly, and plan fridge space.

·       For allergies, check ingredients, avoid cross‑contamination, and call 999 for anaphylaxis.

Road safety – driving over Christmas

·       Plan ahead and arrange a taxi or a lift if you’re drinking.

·       Remember: alcohol takes about one hour per unit to leave your system – only time sobers you up.

·       Don’t drive if you’re fatigued; take breaks and share driving where possible.

Quick checklist before bed

·       Lights off – candles out – cooking appliances off – cigarettes out – smoke alarms tested

These few simple precautions can make all the difference, reducing the risk of accidents and  helping you focus on what matters most making memories and time with those you love.
