Help to build your savings
Help to Save is a government backed savings account for people who receive Universal Credit.
It’s designed to help you save a little at a time – with extra money added by the government.
What you could get
- Save between £1 and £50 a month
- You don’t have to save every month
- The government adds 50p for every £1 you save
- You receive bonus payments at the end of year two and year four
- Your savings are secure and backed by the government.
You can pay in by debit card, standing order or bank transfer. Money can only be withdrawn to your own bank account.
Who can apply
You can apply if you receive Universal Credit, and you (and your partner if it’s a joint claim) earned £1 or more in your last monthly assessment period.
If you claim as a couple, you and your partner can each have your own Help to Save account, but you must apply separately.
Will this affect my benefits?
If you have £6,000 or less in savings, this will not affect your Universal Credit or Housing Benefit. This includes money saved in Help to Save. Help to Save bonuses do not affect your Universal Credit or Housing Benefit.
How to apply
You’ll need to sign in to your Universal Credit account to apply for Help to Save.
