Building skills and confidence
We're looking for new Multi‑Trades Apprentices to join our team at NCHA
If you're curious about what the role is really like, hear from Leo — who started his journey with us as a Multi‑Trades Apprentice in 2024 and is now working towards becoming a fully qualified joiner. His experience offers a great insight into the opportunities and support you can expect when you join us.
When I started thinking about my future, I knew I wanted something practical – something that let me learn new skills while earning a wage. The idea of sitting in a classroom all day just didn’t feel right for me. That’s what motivated me to apply for a Multi-Trade Apprentice role with NCHA.
It allowed me to study for an apprenticeship in Property Maintenance Operative Level 2 with Access Training, co‑owned by NCHA. It offered the best of both worlds: real work experience and a qualification at the same time.
Getting started
I’ll be honest – the application process felt a bit daunting at first. I didn’t really know what to expect, and the interviews were nerve‑racking. But once I got started, I realised how supportive everyone was. The team made me feel comfortable straight away, and that helped my confidence hugely. I imagined the whole thing would be really strict and intense, but the reality was far more encouraging. It’s still hard work, but the people around me have been much more helpful and understanding than I expected.
Learning while working
Balancing work responsibilities with study hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had to learn not to leave things to the last minute and to use my free time wisely. Staying organised makes a massive difference.
The support from both NCHA and Access Training has been brilliant. Whenever I’ve struggled, there’s always been someone who listens and helps me work things through – not just telling me to “get on with it” but really taking the time to support me.
Some of the written assignments were challenging, but the practical parts were where I really came into my own. Seeing myself improve and learn new skills in real time has been the most rewarding part.
Growing skills and confidence
This apprenticeship has helped me develop far more than just technical skills. I’ve built up my communication, teamwork, time management, and overall confidence. I’ve become more comfortable talking to people, learned how to behave professionally in a workplace, and taken on more responsibility.
In my day‑to‑day role, I now feel much more independent. I understand the work better, I don’t need as much help as I did at the start, and I feel trusted. My confidence has grown massively – I’m not scared to ask questions or try new things anymore. I take my work more seriously and feel more motivated than ever.
Facing challenges and staying motivated
The biggest challenge for me has been managing my time when workload and assignments pile up at the same time. It can get stressful but thinking about the future and what I’m working towards helps keep me going. Support from colleagues and my family has made a huge difference too.
If I could give one piece of advice to someone considering an apprenticeship, it would be: just go for it. Don’t overthink it. It’s a great chance to learn, earn, and gain real experience all at once.
Looking ahead
Completing this apprenticeship will open up better job opportunities for me and help me progress in my career. I’d definitely consider doing another apprenticeship in the future if it helps me climb further and develop new skills.
I think apprenticeships are really important for the future of our industry. They bring more young people in and help build a skilled, confident workforce. It’s a proper hands‑on way to learn and prepares you for the realities of the job.
