Leoni’s student placement in Homelessness
A placement with purpose
Leoni joined NCHA in October 2024 as part of her student placement year while studying BSc Psychology with Mental Health at Nottingham Trent University. From the outset, she was based full-time as a Support Worker at the Homelessness Prevention Service (HPS), where she quickly found a passion for the work and a supportive team environment.
“I’ve worked with all my colleagues in some way, either through joint cases or simply seeking advice,” Leoni explains. “The positivity and teamwork here really foster personal and professional growth.”
Driven by a personal connection to homelessness, Leoni chose this field to better understand and challenge the stigma surrounding it. Her work with HPS has deepened this interest, particularly around the intersection of homelessness and mental health, so much so that she plans to base her final year research project on this subject.
A typical day for Leoni involves casework admin, support sessions, liaising with other agencies like Nottingham City Council or Juno, and guiding service users through housing options. “I love structure,” she says. “To-do lists and calendars keep me on track, especially when juggling complex cases.”
Training has played a vital role in her development. Courses in trauma-informed practice, suicide awareness, and drug and alcohol use have helped Leoni grow her confidence and skills in handling a diverse caseload. She highlights adaptability, resilience, and strong interpersonal skills as essential traits for anyone considering the role.
Leoni hopes to work in a mental health-focused project after her course finishes and even aspires to shape future policy. “This role has shown me the power of advocacy. I want to make a real, lasting difference for vulnerable people.”
