Emmanuel’s story as a Support Worker

Making a difference every day

Emmanuel joined Orchard Street in Hucknall, where we provide long-term accommodation for people with mental health needs in January 2023. From day one, he knew he’d found more than just a job, he’d found a purpose.

Emmanuel is part of a close-knit team that are supportive and approachable. “It’s a lovely team,” he says. “You really feel like you’re part of something meaningful.”

Emmanuel’s journey into mental health support began during his Master’s degree. In his university classes, mental health repeatedly came up as a major public health concern, especially in the wake of COVID-19. When he secured his role at NCHA while still studying, the timing couldn’t have been better.

His academic understanding quickly came to life through hands-on experience. Moved by a passion to support people whose lives had been impacted by mental health challenges, Emmanuel embraced the opportunity to help others regain independence and live life to the fullest.

Tailored care

At the core of Emmanuel’s approach is a commitment to care that’s tailored to the person’s unique needs. He works closely with each individual, encouraging and supporting them to do as much as they can for themselves and to lead fulfilling lives, just like anyone else.
“It’s about helping people live more independently,” he explains. “And promoting their choices, dignity and autonomy every step of the way.”

Training and growth

Since joining NCHA, Emmanuel has undertaken extensive training, from mental health and safeguarding to food hygiene, emergency first aid, and end-of-life care.

“I’ve lost count of the number of training sessions,” he says. “But every single one has been crucial to providing the best support possible.”

This commitment to learning has also helped shape Emmanuel’s long-term ambitions. He hopes to grow into more strategic roles, where he can influence policies and improve mental health support on a broader scale.

When asked about the key skills for the role, Emmanuel highlights empathy, listening, communication, and problem-solving. He also stresses the importance of working as part of a wider team of professionals, taking a truly multidisciplinary approach to care.
Support work isn’t always easy, but for Emmanuel, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. “You’re making a difference every day,” he says.
