Counselling that changes lives
Behind every story of survival is a journey of healing. At our Derbyshire Wish domestic abuse support service, we know that escaping abuse is only the first step – emotional recovery takes time, care, and support. That’s why we offer specialist counselling to people aged 16 and over who have been impacted by domestic abuse.
Led by Sallie, a qualified counsellor with a deep personal commitment to this work, the service has grown to include eight volunteer counsellors. Some are master’s students completing their training, others are experienced professionals who choose to stay on and offer their time pro bono. Together, they provide a safe space for people to process trauma and rebuild their lives.
Sessions are trauma-led and tailored to individual needs. Clients may be learning to cope in a refuge, dealing with historical trauma, or finding ways to move forward after years of fear. The service supports both men and women, including those who have fled abuse and those who want to change harmful behaviours. Demand is high – a clear sign of how much this support matters.
Sallie explains: “Our role is to focus on the emotional side of recovery. Practical support helps people feel safe; counselling helps them feel whole again.”
The impact speaks for itself:
“It has helped me so much… being able to speak without fear of judgment has been invaluable.”
“My therapist is so kind and caring… I can’t thank you all enough.”
“I’m not crashing so badly into crisis when I get overwhelmed. I can manage my depressive episodes.”
This service is more than counselling – it’s a lifeline. Together with our refuge and outreach teams, we offer a holistic approach that gives survivors the tools to move forward and live safely.
