A home for life
For Chris and Denise, finding secure housing for their three adult children with Down Syndrome was a seven-year challenge.
In late 2024, that search ended when a collaboration between NCHA and a specialist trust helped them secure a home for life for Mary, Ella and Maitiu.
The family had explored every option, from shared ownership schemes to specialist housing consultants, but they were determined to keep the siblings together.
The turning point came when JMS Trust awarded a £400,000 grant, with a condition that the property be purchased through a housing association. Chris approached NCHA, and we were delighted to help.
By chance, the ideal home Chris had seen years earlier was back on the market. Spacious and adaptable, it offered everything the family needed: bedrooms for each sibling, a quiet TV room, an ensuite for carers and space for 24/7 support. Our development team offered their time for free and made small but important adaptations to ensure the home met the siblings’ needs.
Today, Mary, Ella and Maitiu live together in independence, with the security of knowing they can stay for life. “It’s given us peace of mind,” says Chris. “We know our children have a home for life.”
This unique project highlights the urgent need for housing solutions for adults with learning disabilities – and shows what’s possible when organisations work together.
At NCHA, we’re proud to have played a part in giving this family a home that truly feels like theirs.
