Today is Starts at Home Day
Gemma De Brito, Assistant Director of Homes and Wellbeing
Organised by the National Housing Federation, this annual campaign highlights the importance of supported housing and the amazing difference it makes to vulnerable adults, and the wider community.
Everyone knows what a care home is and everyone knows what it means to live independently, but supported living is less understood.
Supported housing offers a safe home to vulnerable adults. It offers additional support to help residents learn independent living skills and work towards achieving their goals.
At NCHA we offer supported living to people with mental health needs or a learning disability, as well as supporting young people, those fleeing domestic abuse and people experiencing homelessness.
This year, for Starts at Home Day we will be welcoming visitors to two of our mental health support schemes. Cllr Christine Radford and Jon Wilson, Director of Adults and Communities, both of Leicestershire County Council will visit Bridge Street in Shepshed. Ben Bradley, MP for Mansfield and Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council will be welcomed at Midworth Street.
Both visits are a great opportunity for us to talk about the work that we do and offer a voice to the people we support. It also allows us to highlight the big issues we are currently facing; recruitment and retention and soaring energy costs.
Keep a look out on our social media channels, we’ll be sharing images of both visits later on today.
