Helping to end domestic abuse

In the UK one in three women, one in six men and one in five children live in a controlled or abusive situation.

That’s why we’re committed to helping. We’re doing this through the work of our domestic abuse service Derbyshire WISH.

Derbyshire WISH provides a range of domestic abuse support services across Erewash, parts of Amber Valley, Derby Dales and South Derbyshire. They offer refuge (safe accommodation), community based support for adults and their families, and targeted support for children.

The team say: “Our ultimate goal is see a day where our services are no longer needed, where everyone lives a life free from abuse.”

In their refuges they provide a safe place to live, with a mixture of different properties, supporting 38 individuals or families at any one time. This includes communal accommodation for women and children only and individual safe accommodation where they can support men also.

The outreach team offers free and confidential support to additional individuals and families out in the community. They’re currently supporting over 80 families, helping them move forward in a safe way, to make their own choices and live a life free from abuse.

A safer future

The Derbyshire WISH team offer one to one support, group sessions and support over the phone. Together, they work to meet individual’s needs, helping them to plan for a safe future. They provide housing and financial advice, support in legal proceedings and support to access help from other specialist services.

The team includes dedicated children’s workers, who work with children in refuges and young people out in the community. They give targeted, short term support that is vital to help break the cycle of abuse and help them understand what a healthy relationship is.

Referrals come in daily and they work alongside partners, such as The Elm Foundation and Crossroads Derbyshire. These partners cover other areas of Derbyshire helping more people to have access to the support they need.

Janet, Manager at Derbyshire WISH, shares more about the service: “I’ve worked in this field for a long time. Our job is very rewarding but can be tough at times, particularly during COVID-19, where we’re dealing with the increased challenges brought by lockdown. I feel very privileged to work with such an amazing team, who work together to support our clients and each other. We focus on the positive changes we have made and the incredible individuals and families who have worked so hard to transform their lives. We feel humbled to be and have been part of their journey.”
