Colleague voice: my career at NCHA

Katherine Cutts, Assistant Manager for one of our care and support services shares her experience.

"My name is Katherine and I joined NCHA as a mental health support worker in 2007. I am now Assistant Manager for the homelessness project."

What do you love most about your role?

"I really love the work and I am fascinated by the incredible things people can achieve when they receive positive support. I also feel valued and respected, both by service users and by the team of passionate and caring colleagues I work alongside."

What is NCHA like to work for?

"I have a fantastic team, they are like my family and we support each other. My manager is always available for advice and encouraging me to do well.

"NCHA invest in their staff, and I have completed many diplomas and in 2019 I was promoted to Assistant Manager for the homelessness project.

"They also offer family-friendly work policies, so as a mum of two, and I was able to return to work after maternity with a flexible contract. This enabled me to carry on working but most importantly made me feel supported and valued."

What would you say to others interested in a career in care and support?

"Working in care and support is really rewarding as you help make a difference to people’s lives. Every day is different, but if you like helping people and are a good listener then give it a try. You will receive support and training along the way."

What is the hardest part of your role?

"The role can be emotionally challenging but you will be constantly rewarded by the positive impact your work has on individuals’ lives."

Why is our service so important?

"The last 18 months during the pandemic has been very challenging but throughout this period I have helped homeless people move into a home of their own and find employment. Giving people the opportunity to build their confidence and independence again is very rewarding. I am very proud of the work we achieve at NCHA."
