Leicester Landmark Wins Another Top Award
A disused 19th century hosiery factory in the heart of Leicester has won Nottingham Community Housing Association another prestigious award in recognition of its contribution to the regeneration of the city.
The award-winning £4.5m ‘Fabric’ apartment scheme in the St. George’s area was named ‘Regeneration Project of the Year’ at the ProCon Leicestershire Awards 2007. Judged by a panel of industry experts, the awards recognise developments built over the last 18 months and celebrate the excellence and dynamism of the property and construction industries in Leicestershire.
Fabric was a partnership project between Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA), LETS Select Ltd, NCHA’s commercial subsidiary and builder William Davis Ltd. Fabric was designed by NCHA’s in house design team, and partially funded by the Housing Corporation.
Fundamental to its success at ProCon was Fabric’s conversion from a former Victorian factory into a development of 40 smart one and two bedroom ‘city living’ style apartments - one to wheelchair standard - together with a ground floor retail unit. Fourteen apartments are available for shared ownership, 10 for market rent and 16 for sale. The bottom storey of the building provides parking for the apartments. Yeoman Street is within the Leicester Regeneration area, therefore the developers have ensured Fabric retains its external façade and distinctive roofline in sympathy with existing buildings in the locale.
Fabric has also celebrated success at the Green Apple Environmental Best Practice Awards this year, which support the Government’s Civic Pride campaign and were set up by The Green Organisation, an independent environment group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental endeavour. The aim of the awards is to recognise, reward and promote environmental endeavours and initiatives at all levels.
