MP to open £15 million affordable homes

Countess Road development
Sally Keeble, MP for Northampton North, will officially open a multi-million pound development of affordable homes at Countess Road on Friday 30 March at 11.30am.

Originally a brown-field site which had fallen into disrepair, the development for Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) has been built by Westleigh Developments and will provide a mixture of 142 rented and shared-ownership homes just outside the town centre.

With housing at the top of the agenda in Northampton as the average house price for first-time buyers tops £110,000, business has been brisk.  Local estate agents Millers are marketing the shared ownership for NCHA and prices start from just £61,250 for a 50% share, which is great news for a town where the average household income is £28,000.

The site has been built in two phases, with Phase 1 on Lyttleton Road completed in March last year and Phase 2 completed in 2007. Phase 1 includes a 10-room purpose-built teenage parent project called New Horizons. NCHA’S Housing with Care and Suport team manages the property and Bromford Housing Group provides support to the service users.

Some of the rented accommodation has been adapted for disabled users including a stairlift; a wheelchair kitchen and a level access shower. All nominations for the rented accommodation will come from Northampton Borough Council or NCHA’s other accommodation in the Northampton area.

Commenting on NCHA’s increasing contribution towards affordable homes in the town, Sally Keeble said “This is an excellent housing development that shows the way forward for housing. It makes sure that people can get a good quality home and a foot on the housing ladder at an affordable price. Shared ownership, mixed tenure housing is where the future lies for social housing. Congratulations to Nottingham Community Housing Association and their partners."
