Nottingham Community Housing Association’s (NCHA) supported housing project for women and children fleeing domestic violence celebrates 10 years. With domestic violence government statistics rising, Nottingham Community Housing recognised the need for support in this area. Derbyshire WISH (Women in Safe Hands) started life in 1996 when a three bedroomed house was converted to house three women and their children who were fleeing violent partners.
The demand outstripped the need and four years later a new four bedroomed house was built on the grounds. Unfortunately there were still many women in the Derbyshire area who were trapped inside abusive relationships and could see no viable alternative. In 2003 NCHA added community houses. These homes provide the same level of support as the refuges but the women are able to enjoy the independence of their own homes.
“Thank you for everything you have done for me. Thank you for being there when I needed to talk and cry. Most of all thank you for being human; you are all a big credit to yourselves and your job.” Jane*. The project is holding a celebration week from 22nd August, which kicks off with a big anniversary party attended by the Lord Mayor at Ends (15/08/05) |
