Wait over for Woodhouse Affordable Homes
17/05/06

WORK has finally begun on a £4 million regeneration initiative that will see two streets in Mansfield Woodhouse formerly occupied by run down and derelict properties.  Blake Street and Sherwood Street, which had attracted anti-social behaviour and made the area into an eyesore, will be transformed into a development of much-needed affordable homes.

The new development is the result of partnership between Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA), Mansfield District Council, East Midlands Housing (EMH), and Westleigh Developments Ltd.

The council first outlined its plans for the area in 1999 as part of its Neighbourhood Renewal Area initiative. By 2001 around 30 of the 150 homes that were eventually demolished had been cleared but the last properties were not knocked down until earlier this year.

Councillor Heather Henshaw, portfolio holder for housing at Mansfield District Council, said: “This is the start of something magnificent for Mansfield Woodhouse. I would like to thank all the partners that have stuck with this - Mansfield Woodhouse has waited a long time for something like this.”

The scheme aims to offer a choice of tenures – rented, shared ownership and outright sale – plus a range of property types to improve the quality of accommodation in the area, help regenerate Mansfield Woodhouse and develop a sustainable community.

The partners hope to support the local community through training and employment opportunities and also through sourcing local materials for the building work.

The scheme is being part funded by a £1.5 million grant from the Housing Corporation.
