Eco homes get a look over by green guru
11/01/2006

BBC 2s own green guru Penney Poyzer from the programme No Waste Like Home will be coming to Loughborough on 19 January to see the towns latest energy-saving homes.

The 4.5million development for Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) at Hartington Street is a pretty canal-side scheme of 37 affordable homes which have been developed on a brownfield site. Over time the location has lent itself to become more suited to housing so a change of use was sought and acquired.

An existing warehouse has been maintained, revitalised and converted to a mix of affordable homes including a couple of larger ones to cater for the needs of the local community.

Some of the homes in the conversion will have  state-of-the-art photovoltaic panels which will hopefully provide cheaper electricity whilst at the same time helping the environment.
There are also a number of new built units two to cater for wheelchair users and some smaller apartments for shared ownership to enable first-time buyers to get on the first rung of the property ladder, in a university town that is becoming increasingly expensive and difficult for low-wage earners to afford.

Penney Poyzer will be officially opening the site at 11am on Thursday 19 January 06.
