Pioneering project celebrates 20 years
Celebrating a landmark birthday on Friday 3rd April, residents from Nottingham’s oldest Asian Elders Supported Housing scheme invited local dignitaries, family, friends and members of the local community to help cut the cake and look back on two decades of achievements.
The occasion was the 20th birthday of Nottingham Community Housing Association’s (NCHA) Basera House project in Hyson Green. Leading the celebrations were Nottingham MP John Heppell and Councillor Martin Suthers OBE who opened the project as Lord Mayor in March 1989. In a short speech Cllr. Suthers said that he was proud to return to a scheme that had achieved such longevity. "The project has been beautifully looked after and appears just as smart as it did 20 years ago". John Bartle, NCHA’s Housing With Care and Support Manager, said it was "a fantastic day for all involved in one of the region’s most popular older person’s schemes".
Attendees had the chance to meet the project’s original manager, Amanda Allan, who helped to establish Basera, the first scheme of its kind in Nottingham. Amanda was reunited with one of the project’s first residents who spoke of her happiness at having lived at Basera House for 20 years.
NCHA has a dedicated department for housing with care and support and has the largest provision of care and support in the East Midlands. The Asian Elders projects provide accommodation based care and support for persons of Asian origin aged 45 and over in a culturally-appropriate environment.
