Tenants get connected

Computer skills and being able to access the internet are an essential part of modern day life, according to two groups of Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) tenants. The tenants are so determined that everyone on their estates can access computers, they have raised enough money to set up their own internet cafes.

In partnership with staff from NCHA, tenant groups from the Newark Castle Station estate (Newark, Nottinghamshire) and Moorgreen estate (Strelley, Nottingham) have worked together over the past four months to set up internet cafes on their respective estates.

Newark Castle Station’s internet café will be opened by Cllr. Keith Girling on Monday 7th July, followed by the opening of the Moorgreen internet café by NCHA staff on Tuesday 8th July.

With free access available for all tenants on both estates, the groups hope this will give the many tenants without their own computers the chance to take part in computer training, improve existing kids’ homework clubs and access the internet.

Peter Cowley, NCHA’s Regional Housing Manager for Nottingham said:
“NCHA is thrilled that two separate groups of tenants have shown great initiative and decided to help out others on their estates. Having received funding from NCHA’s Tenant and Resident Consortium, this is a great example of two projects created, funded and supported by tenants from across the whole region”.
