Living well with Dementia

Our commitment to health and wellbeing

In line with our support of the UK’s Dementia 2020 plan, we are committed to providing the best services we can for people living with dementia and for older people.

The ‘Dementia 2020’ plan

Currently, there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025.* As such, the government’s vision is that across England by 2020 we will be:

  • the best country in the world for dementia care and support and for people with dementia, their carers and families to live
  • the best place in the world to undertake research into dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases

How can we ensure that we’re providing the best care?

At present, we provide specialist dementia care at George Hythe House, our residential care home in Leicester, but we’re taking this further by ensuring that all our staff having access to useful resources which can help them to better support somebody living with dementia.

Therefore, we provide regular ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions helping staff to better understand what it’s like for somebody living with dementia and how to turn this understanding into positive action.

Additionally, we’ve produced dementia prompt cards that are available to all staff, which have useful information on how to interact with people living with dementia, including key notes to ensure that we’re communicating in a way that is helpful to somebody living with dementia.

Visit the Alzheimer’s Society website for more on their research into dementia.
