Breaking mental health stigma

We’re supporting Time to Talk Day and encouraging all to have open conversations about mental health.

Time to Talk Day is run by Time to Change who’s aim is to help spread the word that you can talk about mental health anywhere.

Time to Change is England’s biggest programme to challenge mental health stigma and discrimination and is run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.

Mental health problems affect 1 in 4 of us, yet there is often a reluctance to talk about it.

Having conversations about mental health in the workplace or in your local community can break down barriers and stereotypes, improve relationships and aid recovery.

At NCHA, we have 22 services that are dedicated to supporting people with mental health needs and understand that breaking mental health stigma is an important part of helping them to be active in their local community.

Pippa Foster, Head of Care and Support, comments: "It’s good to talk…talk about the big stuff, the small stuff, the stuff that makes us feel happy, the stuff that makes us feel uncomfortable, the funny stuff, the stuff that is difficult to say…or the things that make us feel vulnerable, scared or shy. I know from personal experience that talking about how I'm feeling, or what I'm experiencing helps and can open doors to other really helpful conversations with colleagues, friends and family. A listening ear is a wonderful thing. So, ask people how they're doing and don’t be scared to tell people how you're doing….it’s time to talk!"
