Case Study 2 - Kate Nehra

Manager, Biko Square
Supported Housing Services, Learning Disabilities

Reflecting back over the years of being an employee at NCHA, I feel I have achieved so much. I remember in 1993 when I first transferred from being a cook/cleaner for social services, to NCHA as a support worker. It was such a huge move, and I wondered if I would ever be successful in my role.

I attended a lot of internal courses as a part of my development and in 1995, I registered on the NVQ Level 2 Care award. I met Christina Warrington, who became my assessor for many years to come and in 1998, I registered on the NVQ Level 3 Promoting Independence award.

I then thought about developing myself further in my career. I had gained a lot of experience as a support worker and wanted another challenge. I managed to get an acting assistant managers post, and then applied for the permanent position when it was advertised. At this time, NCHA had just introduced assessment tests and I was one of the first staff at NCHA that sat the test for assistant managers. Pam Needham, HR Officer, was really supportive and calm with me going through the IT test. I was successful and secured an assistant managers post at Watcombe Circus.

In 2002, I took the D32/33 NVQ Assessors award. Christina Warrington was again my assessor. I also had the support of the rest of the NVQ assessment team at Kingswood House. I was successful and achieved the award in 2003. I then wanted to try a different service, to gain more experience. I met with Nigel Kimberley, my Service Manager and he informed me of a secondment in Womens Services. I met with Holly Dagnall, Service Manager for Womens Services, and decided to take the secondment Holly was a very supportive manager. I wanted my next move in the career ladder to a managers post and I registered on the NVQ level 4 managers course, which I am now near to completing.

After my secondment finished I moved to the assistant managers post at Biko Square. I discussed my future plans with Jane Watts, my then Service Manager and applied for a managers post. Once again, I was in the safe hands of Pam Needham doing the assessment test for managers. It was really hard and I have had a few goes at it since but I have recently been successful in achieving the managers post at Biko Square.
