Housing Support
‘Grow your own’ supports high standards of care
It’s a case of grow your own to support high standards when it comes to staffing NCHA’s award-winning Housing with Care and Support service (HWCS) who are the largest housing with support organisation in the East Midlands.
Housing with Care and Support trains all its own care workers who attend a two-week induction course covering everything from health and safety to food hygiene. This is backed up by specialist training for staff working with different client groups, among them people with learning difficulties and those with mental health problems.
As an accredited City and Guilds training centre, NCHA also provides training for the NVQ in health and social care for care home workers and others. A performance management scheme supports individual staff members’ personal development plans.
"Training and retaining good staff is the key to providing efficient and sensitive care services, "‘ says John Bartle, Head of HWCS, "and it is part of our duty of care to make sure that all our staff are properly trained. However, the squeeze on Supported People funding is putting pressure on our training programmes."’
NCHA has union recognition agreements with UNISON and MSF which cover HWCS staff. "Providing good working conditions and decent pay is central to maintaining our high quality care services. As a result our staff turnover is much lower than the care sector at large."
