53 Mondays

There’s an extra rent week this financial year

Every few years there are 53 Mondays in the year. Our rents are charged every Monday, so for this financial year (April 2019 – March 2020) there are 53 weekly rent payments due.

Weekly rent

If you pay your rent weekly, you do not need to make any changes to your payment schedule.

Monthly rent

You will need to calculate your monthly rent amount using the following equation:

53 weekly rent payments ÷ 12 months = monthly rent due

If you pay monthly via Direct Debit, we will have already adjusted your rent amount to include the extra week.

Universal Credit

If you receive Universal Credit (UC) the government will continue to calculate your monthly housing element based upon 52 weeks’ rent. Their payments to you will not take into account this additional 53rd Monday.

This means that unfortunately, if you receive UC you will be one week’s rent short and will need to cover this additional week yourselves.

To avoid getting behind with your rent, we strongly recommend that customers receiving UC pay a little extra each month to cover this additional week.

Paying a little extra each month may seem a struggle, but it is the best way to ensure that this extra week is paid for.

We are aware that this situation may be worrying and some customers may struggle to afford these extra payments. We are here to offer support and advice.

If you have any concerns about paying for this additional week, or to arrange for an overpayment schedule, please contact your income officer on: 0800 013 8555 / 0115 844 3150.
